Tri-Cities Activities February 3, 2010, Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. - Monthly Meeting Our speaker, Janelle Downs, Senior Research Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory will talk about - "Know Your Peas and Grasses - How to Recognize and Identify Common Wildflowers and Grasses in the Mid-Columbia". The meeting will be in Room 120 in the CIC building at WSU Tri-Cities, Richland. February 6, 2010, Saturday, 9:30 a.m. Planting at Horn Rapids. We'll be putting native plants into a native garden behind Meacham Hall at Horn Rapids Park. There will be landscape fabric laid down, so a sharp knife would be helpful, along with shovels or trowels. You'll want to bring warm clothes that can be layered, gloves, hats and drinking water. The work may be postponed if the weather gets really cold. February 19-21 2010, Friday-Sunday - Tri-Cities Home & Garden Show We will once again have an informational table at the show, in the Flower Show Area. Our display will show photos of yards landscaped with natives, and there will be information about plant sources to hand out. If you would like to help contact Mickie Chamness (mickiec@charter.net)or 628-0709. Hours for the show are Friday: 11 am to 8 pm; Saturday: 9 am to 8 pm; Sunday: 9 am to 5 pm. March 14, 2010, Sunday, 7 am to 3 pm - Rattlesnake Ridge Riders Ride and Chili Feed We will have a booth set up at Meacham Hall at Horn Rapids Park for this event. This is an opportunity to talk to hundreds of horsemen from all over the state about our lovely wildflowers. If you would like to help contact Mickie Chamness (mickiec@charter.net)or 628-0709. Walla Walla Activities February 4, 2010, Thursday, Noon - First Thursday Lunch - Meet in at Reid Campus Center, corner of Park and Boyer, on the ground floor. Informal discussion of Demonstration Garden plant labels. Bring your lunch and, if you like, a book to exchange. February 10, 2010, Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. – Monthly Meeting - Rebecca Currans of Rugged Country Nursery and Nora Parkhurst, a landscaper, will talk about native plants and their uses in Walla Walla gardens. Nora will talk about garden designs, including those for wetland areas, mixing natives with traditional nursery plants, and creating a native santuary for birds. The Currans grow their native plants primarily from seed and not from cuttings which preserves the genetic diversity in the plant population. Meeting will be in the Whitman Hall of Science, Rm. 142, near the Greenhouse. February 18, 2010, Thursday, 7:30 p.m. – Joint Meeting with Audubon - Bob Carson, Whitman Professor of Geology and Environmental Sciences will provide a visual tour of Patagonia and Aconcagua, including Torres del Paine National Park. Learn about the natural history of the southern Andes. Meeting will be in Gaiser Auditorium, Hall of Science, Whitman College. Every Friday at 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. - Gardening at the Demonstration Garden at the Blue Mountain Humane Society. Please call Laura at 525-1079 or Nancy at 529-2253 so we can let you in. The gate is locked in the morning.
